FREEDOM FOR ASIA BIBI

Sono ore difficili in Pakistan e ad oggi non si hanno ancora notizie sulle sorti di Asia Bibi.
Asia Bibi è stata arrestata il 19 giugno 2009 per false accuse di blasfemia.
Dopo aver bevuto un bicchiere d’acqua durante il lavoro nei campi, venne accusata dalle compagne musulmane di avere infettato la fonte e quando le chiesero di convertirsi all’islam lei si rifiutò. La notizia si diffuse, il villaggio insorse, dagli altoparlanti delle moschee i muezzin chiamarono a raccolta i musulmani per punirla e Asia Bibi fu picchiata davanti ai figli. Per cinque giorni tutto tacque e la vita ricominciò come prima, fino a quando l’imam del villaggio, che non era presente al diverbio, insieme ad altri accusatori, sporse denuncia per blasfemia.

Nel 2010 un tribunale l’ha condannata alla pena capitale.
Nel 2014 poi, l’Alta Corte di Lahore ha confermato la sua condanna a morte.
Tuttavia, la Corte Suprema nel luglio 2015 ha sospeso l’esecuzione.
L’8 ottobre scorso si è tenuta l’ultima udienza del terzo grado di giudizio della Corte suprema, durante la quale l’avvocato di Asia, il musulmano Saiful Malook, ha evidenziato evidenti incongruenze nella versione dell’accusa e le testimonianze raccolte in questi anni.
Dopo circa tre ore di udienza la Corte Suprema del Pakistan ha chiesto ai difensori e ai legali di Asia Bibi di non pubblicare il nuovo materiale sul caso e non ha annunciato una data per la sentenza, che è comunque attesa entro il mese.

Asia Bibi è la prima cristiana (cattolica) condannata a morte in Pakistan secondo gli articoli del Codice penale noti come «legge antiblasfemia».
Nel frattempo viene tenuta in isolamento anche come salvaguardia della sua incolumità davanti a possibili aggressioni e taglie poste sulla donna dagli estremisti islamici.

La comunità cristiana in Pakistan (meno del 2% della popolazione di oltre 200 milioni di abitanti, in maggioranza musulmani) prega affinché presto ad Asia venga restituita la libertà. “Se Asia Bibi dovesse essere liberata, ai giudici spetterà una fine orribile” è quanto promettono i radicali islamici.
In prima linea anche papa Francesco, che in un breve dialogo con Daniel Bashir, il rappresentante dei giovani pakistani al Sinodo in corso in Vaticano, ha detto: “Prego per te [Asia Bibi] ogni giorno, Dio ti benedica”.

All’inizio di questa settimana, Wilson Chowdhry, dell’Associazione cristiana pakistana britannica ha invitato i paesi occidentali ad offrire asilo a Asia Bibi in caso di una sua liberazione. Suo marito Ashiq Masih e la figlia Eisham Ashiq sono attualmente nel Regno Unito.

Alcuni autorevoli esponenti del Parlamento Italiano hanno già fatto appello al nostro governo affinché conceda asilo politico ad Asia Bibi.

Emmanuele Di Leo, Presidente di Steadfast Onlus: “L’asilo politico, concesso in base all’articolo 10 della Costituzione Italiana, offre allo straniero, al quale sia impedito nel suo paese l’effettivo esercizio delle libertà democratiche, il diritto d’asilo nel territorio della nostra Repubblica. Quindi, chi ha timore fondato di essere perseguitato per motivi di razza, religione, nazionalità, appartenenza a un determinato gruppo sociale o per le sue opinioni politiche può trovare rifugio nella nostra Nazione. Tutte le norme sono disciplinate dal Regolamento Dublino II, per il quale lo straniero può richiedere la protezione internazionale nello stato dell’Unione Europea nel quale per primo mette piede. La difficoltà nell’attuare questa opzione sta proprio in quanto appena detto. Asia Bibi si trova in carcere in Pakistan e la sola offerta di asilo politico si rivela inefficace proprio perché il vero problema è riuscire a farla arrivare sul territorio italiano. Quindi, anche dopo gli interventi di alcuni auterovoli politici italiani, ci auspichiamo che il nostro governo, o quello di qualsiasi altra nazione europea, riesca a trovare il modo di far uscire Asia Bibi dal Pakistan, per poi concederle asilo che le salverà la vita. È quindi necessario, ora più che mai, che i governi europei rompano il silenzio e si dichiarino tutti pronti ad accogliere Asia Bibi. Così come è oltremodo necessario che tutti gli enti che si occupano di difesa dei diritti umani facciano fronte comune per chiedere la medesima cosa.”

Asia Bibi was arrested on 19 June 2009 for false accusations of blasphemy.
After drinking a glass of water while working in the fields, she was accused by her fellow Muslims of having infected the source and when they asked her to convert to Islam she refused. The news spread around, the village rose up, from the loudspeakers of the mosques the muezzins summoned the Muslims to punish her and Asia Bibi was beaten in front of her children. For five days afterwards, everything was silent and life began again as before, until the imam of the village, who was not present during the argument, along with other accusers, put forward a complaint for blasphemy.

In 2010, a court sentenced her to death.
Then, in 2014, the Lahore High Court confirmed her death sentence.
However, the Supreme Court suspended the execution in July 2015.
The last 8 October, during the last hearing of the third instance of the Supreme Court, the lawyer of Asia, the Muslim Saiful Malook, highlighted evident inconsistencies between the version of the accusation and the testimonies gathered during these years.
After about three hours of hearing, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has asked Asia Bibi’s defenders and lawyers to not publish the new material about the case and not announcing a date for the sentence, which is though still expected within the month.

Asia Bibi is the first Christian (Catholic) sentenced to death in Pakistan according to the articles of the Criminal Code known as the “anti-blasphemy law”.
In the meantime, she is kept in isolation also as a safeguard of her life due to possible abuse and bounties placed on her name by the Islamic extremists.

The Christian community in Pakistan (less than 2% of a population of over 200 million, mostly Muslim) pray for the freedom to be returned to Asia soon. “If Asia Bibi were to be released, the judges will face a horrible end” is what the Islamic radicals have promised.
At the forefront is also Pope Francis, who in a brief chat held with Daniel Bashir, the representative of the young Pakistani people at the Synod of bishops at the Vatican, said: “I pray for you [Asia Bibi] every day, God bless you”.

Earlier this week, Wilson Chowdhry, from the British Pakistani Christian Association, praised Western countries to offer humanitarian asylum to Asia Bibi in the event of her release. Her husband, Ashiq Masih and her daughter, Eisham Ashiq, are currently living in the United Kingdom.

Some authoritative member of the Italian Parliament has already appealed before the Italian government to grant Asia Bibi political asylum.

Emmanuele Di Leo, President of Steadfast ONLUS declared: “The political asylum, granted based on Article 10 of the Italian Constitution, offers to the foreigner, who is prevented in his country from the effective exercise of democratic freedoms, the right to asylum in the territory of our Republic. Therefore, those who are fearful of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality and belonging to a particular social group or for their political opinions, are welcomed in our nation. All these regulations are governed by the Dublin II act, in which the “foreigner” can apply for international protection in the state of the European Union of first land. The difficulty in implementing this option lies precisely on this matter. Asia Bibi is, in fact, currently imprisoned in Pakistan and the political asylum offer is proved to be ineffective as the real problem would be to get her into the Italian territory. So, other than the interventions of some Italian politicians, we hope that our government, or that of any other European nation, will be able to find a way to get Asia Bibi out of Pakistan and then concede her the asylum that will save her life. It is therefore necessary, now more than ever, that all the European governments will break the silence and declare their willingness to welcome Asia Bibi. In the same way, it is also crucial that all the bodies involved in the defence of human rights get together and speak-up”.
