DEMENTIA: YOU’RE NOT ALONE

While in the Netherlands a recent ruling has given the green light to euthanasia for people with dementia, we at Steadfast Onlus would like to share the words of Sebastiano, coordinator of our SoniAid project:

«I believe that when an elderly person, even with advanced senile dementia, tells me that he would prefer to die, actually he is starting a kind of human relationship with me that he would like to continue for a long time. The fact that you take the first words from a situation of great discomfort and use them not to continue that dialogue it worries me. For the same reason, if we meet a young man with suicidal intent, should we immediately rush and buy him a rope for his good? It seems to me that, digging deep, there is no intention to take each one’s own responsibilities».
